Sheer fortunate chance gave me my reprieve — for the connecting door before me was not only unlocked but actually ajar. In a second I was through, and had my right knee and shoulder against a hall door which was visibly opening inward. My pressure took the opener off guard, for the thing shut as I pushed, so that I could slip the well-conditioned bolt as I had done with the other door. As I gained this respite I heard the battering at the two other doors abate, while a confused clatter came from the connecting door I had shielded with the bedstead. Evidently the bulk of my assailants had entered the southerly room and were massing in a lateral attack. But at the same moment a pass-key sounded in the next door to the north, and I knew that a nearer peril was at hand.

Un pur et simple hasard me donna un sursis – la porte communicante devant moi non seulement n’était pas verrouillée mais même entrebaîllée. En une seconde je la franchis et m’appuyai de mon genou et mon épaule droite sur une porte de couloir qui visiblement était en train de s’ouvrir de l’extérieur. Mon geste prit de surprise celui qui l’ouvrait, et la porte se referma sous ma poussée, je pus refermer le verrou par chance en bon état comme j’avais fait avec la porte précédente. Mais si j’y gagnais un sursis, j’entendais le vacarme grandir sur les deux autres portes, tandis qu’un fracas confus me provenait de la porte que j’avais condamnée en poussant le lit. D’évidence, le gros de mes assaillants était entré dans la chambre sud et voulait prolonger son attaque latérale. Mais au même moment, un bruit de serrure me parvient depuis la prochaine porte côté nord, et je sus que jamais le péril n’avait été si grand.
