Stylo Safety Waterman plume rétractable 1908-2

Histoire d’un stylo.

La compagnie Waterman a été créée en 1884. Elle est une des dernières encore en activité parmi les entreprises pionnières des stylo-plumes à réservoir (avec Parker, Sheaffer…).

En anglais: Fountain pen. Stylo-plume pour stylo-fontaine, fontaine je ne boirai plus de ton encre dans laquelle j’ai trempé ma plume. Un stylo fontaine pour s’y abreuver de mots qui désaltèrent tant que la plume ne sèche pas.

Après l’exposition universelle de Paris de 1900, la compagnie new yorkaise Waterman va entamer une politique commerciale agressive à l’échelle mondiale qui va notamment viser le marché français de l’écriture.

Le SAFETY: le premier stylo rétractable complètement anti-fuite d’encre. On trouve un Brevet « Safety Fountain Pen » déposé pour Waterman par F.Gilbert le 28 janvier 1902 sous le n° 692009. Il concerne le bouchon vissé.

1904, Le clip à stylo est inventé, pour permettre d’attacher le stylo au rebord d’une poche. A partir de 1905, Waterman en équipe tous ses stylos.

Pour Waterman, le Safety est annoncé en juillet 1908 (même si certaines sources identifient son lancement en 1907) sur la base des modèles déposés par Francis C. Brown en deux temps: brevet déposé en 1898 (U.S. Patent n° 612 013) et en 1910 (U.S. Patent n° 949,752).

Un pas de vis hélicoïdale permet à la fois d’extraire la plume et de l’alimenter en encre. Quand elle est rentrée, la plume ne sèche pas puisqu’elle baigne dans l’encre.

Le Blog de GG917 précise que « les Waterman safety sont apparus en 1908, dans des versions avec un pas de vis sur le bouton à l’extrémité du stylo pour y visser le capuchon une fois le stylo ouvert. En 1911 le pas de vis sur le bouton disparait en même temps qu’un changement dans l’arrangement interne des pièces est aussi opéré: «l’hélice» devient la partie mobile du mécanisme alors que sur les premières versions elle était taillée sur la face interne sur corps. Dans ces premières versions la tige qui maintient la plume glissait sur un « rail » interne qui était actionné par le bouton. Une vue en éclate des deux versions est disponible sur le site de David Nishimura. Les safety resteront sous cette deuxième version jusqu’à leur retrait du catalogue en 1936.»

Une publicité anglaise de 1908 mentionne:
« Primarily Designed for Laides, Travellers, and Sportsmen, but far too good a pen to be thus restricted in its usefulness,

for instance, might prefer this type to the regular style of Waterman’s Ideal. It differs in that it can be carried in any. Position – upside-down, right side-up, side-ways, end-ways – without leaking. »

On ne parle jamais de la boîte en carton bleu marine qui contient le Waterman’s Safety #42 ni de la pipette en verre à la poire de caoutchouc
